Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that the United Nations International Court of Justice does not have the right to consider the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
TASS news agency quoted Zakharova as saying in an interview on Russia's Channel One today that Russia's representatives were absent from the International Court of Justice's hearings on the lawsuit brought by Ukraine against Russia because the special military operation is outside the court's jurisdiction.
Zakharova added, "As you know, some statements were made today regarding the hearings in The Hague in which Ukraine is trying to resort to the International Court of Justice, and we decided not to participate in the hearings.. It constitutes a well-known tactic.. We believe that the court has no jurisdiction over the issue of the military operation." which the Ukrainian side wants to consider.
She added that Russia made its position clear to the International Court of Justice in writing.
On the other hand, Zakharova pointed out that Moscow keeps the door open to diplomatic contacts with the Ukrainian side... As soon as corresponding signs appear, we will take measures in this regard.
Earlier today, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced plans to hold a meeting between Russian Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Ukrainian Dmitry Kuleba, in the presence of the Turkish Foreign Minister late this week.
