10 small fires reported in Central Park in New York. Firefighters say they were intentional

Authorities are investigating up to 10 small fires in Central Park in New York, in what they consider an arson attack, official sources told the NBC News affiliate in the city.

The fire started before 2 pm in the North Woods sector, which is characterized as a space where you can watch birds and other activities related to nature.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said it was working to extinguish the fire in "numerous" areas of woods at the scene, however police sources told NBC that what was burning was trash.

"We're going to take the approach that they were intentionally provoked," FDNY spokesman Jim Long told The New York Post. 

The flames were brought under control around 3 pm.

Another fire was also reported in the

same area in the morning

and the authorities are investigating if it is related to the incident in the afternoon.

Videos captured at the time show the smoke rising through the windows of the buildings.

No one was injured by the events and the authorities confirmed that there was no serious damage to the park.

Multiple witnesses told police they had seen a man setting a fire on the West Side.

Police told ABC News, the suspect is described as a white male last seen wearing green pants, a black jacket with a hood.
