Their country has been invaded, they are seeking refuge from war: can Ukrainian refugees find shelter in wooden churches?

The municipality is considering releasing its iron reserve.

Holzkirchen

– In view of the growing flow of refugees from the Ukrainian war zones, the largest municipality in the district is also considering whether it can provide quarters.

"We have an iron reserve, that would be the point," says Holzkirchen Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU).

According to an initial check, only a handful of apartments in the old municipal blocks on Baumgartenstrasse, which are currently empty and would be habitable, come into question.

"Much more will not work," says Schmid.

Otherwise, hopes rest on Holzkirchner citizens who are willing to give shelter to war refugees.

"Already last week, some citizens offered their help," reports the head of the town hall.

"Now it's a matter of channeling the willingness to help into the right channels." The district of Miesbach reacted quickly and set up an online portal that collects offers and lists what is really needed (www.landkreis-miesbach.de/ukrainehilfe ).

So far, hardly any Ukrainians live in the market town

So far, hardly any Ukrainian citizens live in Holzkirchen.

According to Schmid, almost a dozen are officially registered, including a large refugee family.

However, the mayor assumes that significantly more Ukrainian families will soon arrive in Bavaria.

Can gyms be a solution?

"We talked to the district about this option," says Schmid.

Here too, however, the market community cannot draw on unlimited resources.

Of the ten hall units in Holzkirchen, the three units on Probst-Sigl-Strasse (primary school/secondary school) are still out because a ventilation system is being retrofitted (we reported).

Curtailing school and club sport again now that the corona restrictions are just falling, "that would be a difficult balancing act," believes Schmid.

The small Föching gymnasium would quickly have been converted into an emergency shelter, but it's cold and drafty there.

Most of the refugees are women with children, says Schmid, "you have to look carefully to see if it works".

But even about an air dome in Moarholzl, which was set up a few years ago to take in refugees, you have to talk openly.

"The community will not object to any suggestions," emphasizes Schmid, "it's about humanity."
