Syrian-Iraqi talks in Baghdad to enhance water cooperation and confront climate change

On the sidelines of his current visit to Baghdad, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Tammam Raad, discussed with his Iraqi counterpart, Mahdi Al-Hamdani, prospects for joint cooperation between Syria and Iraq and unifying visions and positions regarding shared water in light of climate changes that threaten the region in general, and Syria and Iraq in particular.

In a statement to SANA reporter in Baghdad, Minister Raad pointed out the importance of the Iraqi efforts exerted in organizing the second Baghdad Conference on Water and Climate Change, stressing the importance of continuing to develop relations and bonds of joint cooperation between the two brotherly countries through mutual visits and organizing courses on studies of climate change and its impact on the two countries due to the fate that binds them. One in the face of water scarcity and the challenges of climatic conditions.

For his part, the Iraqi Minister Al-Hamdani affirmed in a similar statement to the correspondent the depth of joint cooperation between the two countries, pointing to the importance of the joint research center to benefit from the experiences of the riparian countries with Iraq.

He also pointed to the necessity of obtaining fair water quotas, taking into account the sharing of damage in times of crisis, and continuing to hold periodic and technical ministerial meetings in attendance or via closed-circuit television.

The work of the second Baghdad International Water Conference was launched last Saturday under the slogan "Water and Climate Change", with the participation of a Syrian delegation headed by Dr. Raad and delegations from several Arab and foreign countries and organizations.
