Their days are numbered: the discounter's branch on Rudolf-Diesel-Ring is being demolished and rebuilt in a much larger style.

It should then also be accessible from the pedestrian and cycle path surrounding it.

Clearer, more attractive - and above all larger: Aldi is currently converting all branches in southern Germany.

The discounter in Holzkirchen will be coming soon.

It will be demolished and rebuilt.

Holzkirchen –

From the food processor with WLAN function to lingerie for curvy women to cold cuts: the Aldi retail chain offers a wide range.

Almost all 1,890 branches in western and southern Germany are getting a new look so that customers can find their way around the supermarkets more easily in future.

According to the company's website, the shop design should offer more orientation and clarity.

In Holzkirchen, the redesign is radical: the branch on Rudolf-Diesel-Ring is completely demolished and rebuilt.

This was announced by the building committee of the Holzkirchner municipal council at its meeting on Thursday evening.

In the course of the new building, the sales area will increase to 1,174 square meters.

How big the sales area is at the moment was not an issue at the committee meeting, and the Aldi group did not answer a corresponding request from Holzkirchner Merkur on Friday.

The footprint of the supermarket will also increase as part of the new construction: from the current 1,452 square meters to 1,949 square meters.

In order to make this expansion possible, Aldi had acquired the green strip on the west side of the market.

The municipality of Holzkirchen suggested integrating the cycle path and footpath that leads past the supermarket as part of the new building.

"It has often annoyed me that you can't get in there, but that you have to drive around the outside," said Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU).

The retail giant is taking up the community's idea and is now planning direct access from the cycle path and footpath to the discounter's outdoor area.

Instead of the previous gabled roof, the new building is to have a flat roof.

"We find it positive that this is to be intensively greened," said Isabella Britze from the building authority of the market town.

It is still unclear when the demolition will begin and when the new Aldi store will be ready.

On the other hand, some innovations inside are clear: According to Schmid, the discounter wants to increase its share of fresh produce and replace the baking machine with a self-service bread area, which is connected to a bakery in which supplies are baked continuously.

The administration of the market town has been dealing with the construction project of the retail giant for a long time: The background is that the desired planning of the company is not compatible with the currently valid development plan from 2007.

Aldi had therefore already applied for a change in the development plan in 2019.

In autumn 2021, revised plans and a preliminary draft for the adjustment of the development plan were submitted.

"Aldi commissioned planners itself and also bears the costs," said Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU).

The building committee has now decided to initiate the change process.

However, the formal change procedure for the development plan still has to be carried out.

Only then is the way clear for demolition and new construction.
