Vladimir Putin overestimated the performance of the Russian army, underestimated the patriotism, the determination and the capacities of resistance of the Ukrainians, minimized the risk of international sanctions because of his contempt for the West.
The stalemate of his army as well as the inflation of the economic and human losses involve him in an ascent to the extremes of violence.
The next step, modeled on the destruction of Grozny and Aleppo, will be the siege and destruction of entire swathes of cities in central and eastern Ukraine.
