According to the new evaluation by the WSI (Economic and Social Science Institute), there were around 7.157 million employees in Germany as of June 30, 2021 who have a 450-euro mini job.

There are significant regional differences: the average in Germany is 7.9 percent.

The three districts with the highest proportion of employees in 450-euro part-time jobs were all in Bavaria in mid-2021.

These are Dachau (16.0 percent), Fürstenfeldbruck (15.0 percent) and Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen (14.6 percent).

In Dessau-Roßlau (2.8 percent) as well as in Wolfsburg and Uckermark (2.9 percent each), part-time jobs are the least common in relation to total employment.

The proportion is also high in the other districts in the region, with 13 percent in Ebersberg, 13.9 percent in Erding and 11.3 percent in Starnberg.

The DGB Chairwoman for Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck, Starnberg, Munich and Munich Land, Simone Burger, explains the figures: “The high proportion of part-time jobs also reflects the high cost of living in the region.

Many employees need a part-time job to be able to cover their expenses.

Burger: “We take a critical view of the increase in mini-jobs.

Even in normal economic times, mini-jobs have proven to be a form of employment with very weak social security and low wages are widespread.

In the Corona crisis, the precarity of many mini-jobs became particularly clear once again: Since no payment is made into unemployment insurance for low-wage employment, they could not be covered by short-time work during the pandemic, and there is no entitlement to unemployment benefits if you lose your job. The effects of the epidemic were exacerbated by the fact that 450-euro mini-jobs were particularly widespread in sectors such as gastronomy and retail, which suffered greatly from the contact restrictions.
