The curfew will take effect at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday (local time) and will last until 7:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The curfew is currently in force in Kyiv, but only at night, between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Residents will be prohibited from leaving their homes without special permits during the curfew, Klitschko said, adding that people will still be able to leave to go to bomb shelters.

European economy ministers formally approved a fourth package of sanctions against more than 600 Russian citizens, in what French economy minister Bruno Le Maire called a "historic decision."

It is the "fastest and most forceful package of sanctions ever adopted by the European Union in its history", the ministers said.

The names of the Russian individuals and entities included in the new round of sanctions were not disclosed.

  • Why does Europe not respond in the same way as the US with the sanctions against Russia?

"There will be a new ban on some exports, such as luxury products, and we will withdraw from the Russian state the most favored nation clause within the World Trade Organization, which will allow us - the 27 member states - to increase the level of trade tariffs on all Russian products," Le Maire said.

The sanctions were expanded to include "key oligarchs, lobbyists and propagandists who push the Kremlin's narrative about the situation in Ukraine, as well as key companies in the aviation, military and dual-use, shipbuilding and machinery sectors." ", the European Council said in a statement.

Asked if there would be more sanctions, Le Maire said: "I can confirm what (French President) Emmanuel Macron said last week, all options are still on the table."
