The Paraguayan Congress was to debate this Friday the bill, promoted by the government of President Mario Abdo Benítez, which seeks to stabilize the price of fuel and cushion international fluctuations.

Many legislators did not agree, so the necessary quorum was not achieved.

Since Monday, various transport unions, such as truck drivers, taxi drivers, delivery men and platform service drivers, have led protests with intermittent road closures in several cities to demand that fuel prices drop.

Until this Wednesday, common type 3 diesel was priced at 7,050 guaraníes per liter (US$1), and 93-octane naphtha reached 7,710 guaraníes (US$1.10) per liter.

The government announced that it intends a reduction of 1,500 guaraníes (US$0.22) per liter of fuel.

The president of the Senate, Oscar Salomón, had met with representatives of the carriers in order to discuss the project of the Executive Power, to discuss the bill to solve the increase in fuel.

As announced by the government, the fund would be capitalized with a loan of US$ 100 million from the Andean Development Corporation and the payment of the loan will be with the income from the fuel import tax, once international fuel prices improve.

The legislator of the opposition Guasu Front, Sixto Pereira, said that the best option is for Petróleos del Paraguay (Petropar) to re-regulate fuel prices.

And he added that the president can order it by decree.

The truckers announced that they were willing to lift the measure if the law was approved, but this Friday after the lack of a favorable response in the Senate, the leaders of the trucking sector told the press that they are analyzing taking the trucks to Asunción to toughen the force, since Sunday.

After meeting with the president of Congress, the truckers had announced that they would lift the road closures if the Senate approves the bill to create the fuel price stabilization fund.

However, that was not achieved, so the representative of the motorcycle taxi drivers' union, Gabriel Samaniego, together with taxi drivers and alternative transport, said in an interview with the newspaper Última Hora, that they temporarily lifted the measure of force, and would be expectant what is resolved this Friday.

Incidents

This Thursday, a group of truck drivers and motorcycle taxi drivers staged a confrontation with blows in the area where mobilizations are taking place for the reduction of fuel prices in Ciudad del Este, 320 kilometers from the capital, Asunción.

The incident, as reported by Noticias Paraguay (NPY), occurred because the motorcycle taxi drivers wanted to drive along a route where the truck drivers were intermittently blocking.

On the other hand, in the road blockade in the Department of San Pedro there was a tense moment this Thursday, between protesters and the police, who tried to clear a route, but it did not go too far, according to the Diario Ultima Hora.

The commander of the National Police told Paraguay news that there are about 60 courts throughout the country;

and that the National Police will continue to intervene in the closure places to clear routes.

The protests and roadblocks generated problems in various sectors, including public transportation, and the distribution of food from production centers.

José Vidal, head of the National Directorate of Public Transport (Dinatran) wrote on his Twitter account: "When the National Police already guaranteed that there would be free traffic on the route, services (of public transport) began to be restored and We no longer had any problems."

Since this Friday, public transport services have been restarted, albeit irregularly.
