Today in Indonesia, the meetings of the 144th session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union began with the participation of a delegation from the Syrian People's Assembly.
The session’s meetings are entitled “Reaching Zero Emissions” and work to mobilize parliaments to work on climate change. During these meetings, the 209th session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will be held.
Indonesian President Jokowi Widodo stressed during the opening of the General Assembly, according to the Indonesian News Agency, the importance of focusing discussions on climate and shedding light on the need to shift towards renewable energies instead of relying on fossil energy, reviewing his country's experience in this context in terms of reliance on wind, solar and hydroelectric energy. .
It is noteworthy that the meetings also aim to exchange views and seek to stimulate parliamentary action on a number of pressing issues such as strengthening democracy, human rights, youth participation, achieving security, arms control, promoting sustainable development efforts, and enhancing information and communication technology as an aid to the education sector, including during times of the pandemic.
The Syrian delegation is represented by Salloum Al-Salloum, Maysa Saleh, Secretary of the People's Assembly, Fayza Al-Athba, the Council's observer, Omar Al-Hamdo, head of the Syrian-Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Committee, Nidal Al-Alou, Akram Abdel Jalil, two council members, Abdul Azim Diab, director of public relations in the Council, in addition to the Chargé d'Affairs of the Syrian Embassy in Jakarta, Minister Plenipotentiary Abd Monem Anan.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union acts as the main platform for dialogue between parliaments in the world in order to achieve peace and cooperation among peoples and to strengthen parliamentary institutions.
