In view of the increasing number of Ukrainian war refugees, calls for international coordination are being made in Germany.

Also from Foreign Minister Baerbock.

Berlin - The escalating Ukraine conflict is not only costing the lives of many soldiers and civilians on both sides of the war.

But it also ensures that millions of people have to leave their homes and seek protection in western Europe.

German reactions to the influx of refugees from politics and society are - in contrast to the so-called refugee crisis in 2015 - largely positive and helpful.

The demands for international and fair support for the refugees are getting louder.

Ukraine war: FDP demands "international crisis meeting" for refugees

Among other things, the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag has called for an "international crisis meeting" at which the distribution of war refugees from Ukraine must be clarified.

Group leader Christian Dürr called for a common solution to the problem of cohesion in Europe.

"It must be the goal of western countries that we pull together here," said the 44-year-old.

Referring to the Russian ruler, Dürr adds: "Of course, the question of coordination must not split the West here, because that is exactly Vladimir Putin's goal." It is now much more about ensuring the humanitarian accommodation of the refugees.

According to Dürr, it would be good if Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) initiated such a meeting.

Refugees from Ukraine: Foreign Minister Baerbock calls for solidarity

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) also spoke on Monday (March 21) with regard to the increased need for action due to the Ukraine war and above all called for support for the countries that have already taken in many war refugees.

“We are experiencing the greatest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War.

Millions of people are fleeing,” states Baerbock.

The Foreign Minister assumes that the number of refugees will increase to eight to ten million in the coming weeks.

A challenge that can only be met in Europe together.

Ukraine war: Baerbock for setting up 'humanitarian hubs'

Baerbock therefore suggested that the EU set up so-called humanitarian hubs.

Central offices in each country from which the refugees can then be distributed in a coordinated manner.

The Foreign Minister referred to the current situation in Poland and the Republic of Moldova.

There is an enormous initiative by the civilian population to take in refugees, but above all there is a need for appropriate facilities such as day-care centers or schools.

"No country can do this alone," says Baerbock.

War in Ukraine: CDU criticizes federal government for distribution of refugees

In view of the number of refugees, opposition leader Friedrich Merz initially called for a crisis summit between the federal and state governments in order to better organize the distribution of refugees.

"We are dealing with major deficits at the administrative level," said Merz on the sidelines of a meeting of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

The Union sees an “unchanged need for action” here.

Many people from Ukraine are fleeing to the EU states of Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia because of the Russian attack on the neighboring country.

But the Republic of Moldova, which is not a member of the EU, is also a destination for many people.
