An Israeli citizen was arrested today (Wednesday) in Guatemala, apparently because of a drug offense.
Guatemala is considered a country where prison conditions in many cases are considered relatively harsh.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed the case, and the Israeli consulate in Guatemala visited the Israeli in the detention facility and is in constant contact with the detainee and her parents.
It is still unclear the severity of the offense and the punishment facing the Israeli if she is convicted.
Guatemala is considered a country where there is quite a bit of illegal drug trafficking, and some call it a "transit station" for drugs to the northern part of the American continent.
Guatemala is bordered by Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize.
