The Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields Yescas, has denounced this morning the arbitrariness of what he considers the "dictatorship" of Daniel Ortega and has advocated the release of the more than 170 political prisoners of the regime .
In an appearance before the Permanent Council of the OAS, McFields Yescas has affirmed that in his country there is no freedom of the press, separation of powers, that there have been confiscations of universities and 130 civil society organizations have been cancelled.
"The people inside the government are tired of the dictatorship," said the diplomat.
The statements by McFields Yescas are a blow to the diplomatic strategy of Daniel Ortega, who within the OAS has maintained the narrative that in Nicaragua an attempt was made to orchestrate a coup against him after the start of the massive demonstrations of 2018, that the president ordered to burst with violence: the repression left more than 360 dead, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
Due to his authoritarian drift, Ortega is isolated by the international community, for which he has had to seek support from Russia, China and Iran.
The strong statements made by Ambassador McFields Yescas this morning may reinforce that isolation, mainly in Latin America, because the denunciations of human rights violations come this time from a representative of the Managua regime.
