One of the men who masterminded the 2020 kidnapping said he and his accomplices wanted to "cause as much disruption as possible" before the presidential election.

Ty Garbin, the man who pleaded guilty to masterminding a 2020 kidnapping of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, said his and his accomplices' ultimate goal was to prevent Joe Biden from winning the presidential election.

Although he did not give details of why they wanted to prevent Biden's victory, the 26-year-old assured this Wednesday that they wanted to "cause as much disturbance as possible," according to

The Associated Press news agency.

Garbin was arrested in October, a month before the elections.

Along with him, Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr., Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta were also arrested.

All were charged with conspiracy.

Investigations revealed the men were trying to raise $4,000

to purchase an explosive to blow up a bridge in northern Michigan during the hijacking.

The five men were described as "anti-government extremists".

Back then, they showed their position against measures to reduce COVID-19 cases in the state, and their discontent with politics in general.

"The goal was to 'kidnap the governor,'" Garbin said in response to Deputy District Attorney Nils Kessler, who is in charge of the case.

Garbin, who is a key witness in the case, detailed his plan to carry out the kidnapping during the trial, saying he and his partners had trained for it at his home in Luther, Michigan.

He also described an overnight visit to Governor Whitmer's home.

The defense of the accused has said that the men were misled by the government, but Garbin denied that they were influenced in any way.

During the trial, the jury has heard from FBI agents and an informant who secretly recorded hours of incriminating conversations with the men.

Kaleb Franks, who has also pleaded guilty, will testify at trial.

The Michigan governor does not often refer to the case but has blamed former President Donald Trump for refusing to condemn right-wing extremists and criticizing COVID-19 restrictions.
