According to the US official, Russian troops are now located east of Kyiv, 55 kilometers from the city center.

Russian units have been pushed back 25 to 35 kilometers compared to the previous day, the official told CNN.

At the same time, Russian soldiers in the north-west of the city would consolidate their position and set up defensive positions.

The Ukrainian cities of Izyum and Chernihiv have been the scene of heavy fighting in the Ukraine war for days.

Now, new footage has emerged showing the destruction caused by constant shelling from Russian troops.

The mayor of Chernihiv, Vladislav Atroschenko, published a video on Telegram showing him driving through the destroyed city.

You can see black smoke rising from several points.

Atroschenko described the situation in the city as a "complete bloodbath" and drew attention to the high death toll.

The local cemetery cannot accommodate all of the dead, which is why the deceased are kept in refrigerators and morgues “longer than normal”.

In addition, the bodies are buried in old cemeteries.

Atroschenko did not provide precise information on the number of deaths.

Ukraine war: US formally accuses Russia of war crimes and threatens to take action

Meanwhile, the US formally accused Russia of war crimes in Ukraine.

Evidence of this has been collected.

"Based on the information currently available, the US government assumes that members of the Russian armed forces have committed war crimes in Ukraine," said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

There are numerous credible reports of indiscriminate attacks, attacks intentionally targeting civilians and other atrocities.

The US assessment is based on both publicly available and intelligence information.

He pointed to the destruction of "homes, schools, hospitals, essential facilities, civilian vehicles, shopping malls and ambulances" that caused "thousands of deaths and injuries."

Many of these sites were "clearly marked as being used by civilians," he explained.

Blinken announced that the US wanted to investigate the crimes in court.

We are prepared "to demand accountability by all means at our disposal, including criminal prosecution".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj* addressed the Russian people in a video message.

He appealed to Russian citizens: "Save your sons from the war." Ukraine has never threatened the security of Russia, he underlined, stressing that Russian propaganda lies about the war "which is paid for with your taxes".

According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainians would do anything to ensure peace: "And if this happens, then at least you will be sure that your children will no longer be sent to die on our land, on our territory." The Russian Military forces would destroy Ukrainian cities, kill civilians, rape women, kidnap children and shoot at refugees, the Ukrainian leader said.

"Russian troops know no boundaries for evil," Zelenskyy said.

He called on the Ukrainian population to protest worldwide.
