Deputy Chairman of Russia's National Security Council Dmitry Medvedev mocked the West's reliance that its sanctions would push Russian businessmen to put pressure on the country's leadership, calling it "stupid".

Medvedev said in an interview with Sputnik Agency today: "The West's reliance that restrictive measures against the financial and business sector will be translated into some kind of influence on power is absolutely meaningless and nothing but stupidity and absurdity."

Medvedev also pointed out that the West, through sanctions, is trying to influence the sectors of the economy in which major companies operate, and this affects hundreds of thousands and even millions of Russian citizens.

He said, "In fact, the Western world, with its sanctions, is trying to influence the citizens of our country to harm them and incite them against the policy of the state leadership and the approach of the president... But it seems that those who make such decisions do not understand our mentality or the Russian people's view of the world in the broad sense of the word."

Medvedev stressed that in the difficult stages of Russia's history, including the periods of various military campaigns, the appearance of restrictions and deprivation led to the strengthening of the people's cohesion, not division, adding, "This is the biggest mistake in their assessments... This is the weak point of these stupid sanctions."

Medvedev pointed out that criticism of the authority is normal, but adopting an anti-state approach during a special military operation is "treason," noting that three-quarters of Russians support the operation in Ukraine, according to opinion polls.
