In the deadly attack yesterday (Sunday) in Hadera, one detail attracted special attention: the terrorists wore T-shirts with the logo of the "Punishing" comic book character printed on them.

Who is he "punishing" and why did he become a revered figure on the terrorists?

The history of "The Punisher" is long and complicated.

The character from the Marvel creator first appeared in the February 1974 edition of "The Miraculous Spider-Man" - and was supposed to represent the anti-hero to the heroic spider man.

"The Punisher was originally created as a secondary character who was supposed to appear in only one edition," writer Jerry Conway told Time magazine in 2015.

"But readers embraced him and saw him as a figure fighting evil," he added.

In his daily life, the "Punisher" is Frank Cassel, a U.S. soldier from the Vietnam War whose family was killed by the Mafia in Central Park in New York.

Disappointed by the police, Cassel decides to take the law into his own hands and sets out to avenge the deaths of his loved ones when he does not resort to measures that include torture, murder and kidnapping as part of his revenge campaign.

As far as the "punisher" is concerned, the goal serves all means when it comes to the war on evil.

Based on the character, movies were made, the first starring the action star Dolph Lundergan and even a series on Netflix.

From the comic shelves to Iraq

Over the years, various bodies, from far-right groups in the U.S., the U.S. military, U.S. police to Shiite militia organizations, have begun to use the figure of the "punisher" and its own logo, a skull with long, menacing fangs, each according to its own goals.

In 2020, the logo was also adopted by the "Important Black Lives" movement in the United States

On the battlefield in Iraq, the "Punisher" first appeared thanks to American soldiers. Has four dialects to indicate that it is an area under their control.

Iraqi security forces and Shiite militias accused of looting cities, burning houses and killing during the fight against ISIS in Iraq used the symbol as well.

"He corrects injustices. He kills the bad guys. He makes the bad guys afraid of him," Kyle wrote in his autobiography, in which he described his life as a sniper.

"We spray-painted the logo on our rifles and helmets and vehicles. We spray-painted it on the walls of houses because we wanted people to know we were here (in Iraq) and not worth getting involved with us," he wrote.

"The Failure of Law and Order"

In recent years, police officers, U.S. military personnel, Sean Hanity, the veteran and conservative Fox News presenter and followers of QAnon, a conspiracy theory prevalent among the far right in the U.S., have adopted the character of the "punisher" and become devout fans. represents the failure of the law and order to address the problems of people who feel they have been neglected by the justice system," Conway told Forbes in 2020. "It always surprised me to see "It's silly and ironic that the police have adopted an extreme symbol of a character who is outlawed," he added.

Conway, who was 21 when he invented the character, added that he is actually opposed to wars.

"I have written a lot against wars," he told Forbes, even revealing that he had stated at the time that he had a conscientious objection not to fight in Vietnam.

Marvel recently announced that it is changing the "Punisher" logo due to its controversial history.

According to reports, the new logo is similar to "Oni", a mythical Japanese demon.

The "uni" were perceived in mythology as evil and murderous figures, but in modern culture they are seen as defenders whose job is to drive away bad luck - and symbolize the anti-hero similar to the "punisher".
