The Sri Lankan authorities placed the capital Colombo under curfew on Thursday evening, after a demonstration of several hundred people outside the home of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa degenerated, the police firing on the crowd.

It was not immediately known if the police fired live ammunition;
at least one person was injured, witnesses said.
The indefinite curfew was proclaimed as protesters demanded the resignation of the president, accused of being unable to manage the severe economic crisis hitting this Southeast Asian country.
