Amateur footage from Mariupol shows people running through a building in the city center under fire.

They make it outside - and film scenes there that are reminiscent of an end-time film.

Only a few people can be seen on the streets of the city of 400,000 in south-eastern Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands have already fled.

The Ukrainian army is resisting the enemy, who are far superior in terms of firepower.

These soldiers have largely withdrawn to the premises of a production facility.

Apparently they still have enough ammunition to counter the attackers.

Mariupol is almost constantly under fire.

There is no running water, gas or electricity.

According to the mayor's office, around 300,000 people have already fled the city, and 5,000 residents are said to have been killed - including children.

Almost all buildings were damaged.

Russia has announced that it will open an escape corridor from the embattled port city for civilians who persevere.

It is unclear whether the evacuation will succeed.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyi expects even heavier fighting in the east and south of the country.
