At least 12 people were killed and 10 injured as a result of violence in a prison in Ecuador.
Reuters quoted Ecuadorean Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo as saying in a statement today that clashes took place in El Torre prison in Cuenca, while prisoners were trying to take over the prison, killing at least 12 prisoners and wounding 10 others, noting that there are still some cells. Witnessing a rebellion so far, without giving further details.
The violence in Ecuadorean prisons, which the government says is linked to the struggle between gangs over drug trafficking, killed 316 people last year.
