Should we consider this drama as a simple news item or does it say something about our society?

There is nothing less "diverse" than a news item, especially this one.
That a man is attacked by a gang of fifteen people, that one of them strikes him "extremely violent blows", that he manages to extract himself from the pack to flee and in his flight does not see the tram arrive, it is anything but a trivial fact.
However, the expression "news item" implies unimportant facts, whereas here we have a fact representative of a given society and period.
