A blackout in Puerto Rico leaves several municipalities without electricity

A breakdown that occurred this Thursday night at the Costa Sur plant, located in the municipality of Guayanilla, in southern Puerto Rico, caused a blackout that left several municipalities on the island without power.

The company Luma Energy, in charge of managing the transmission and distribution of electricity in Puerto Rico, published a press release confirming the situation.

“The power grid has suffered a massive island-wide blackout, potentially caused by a circuit breaker failure at the Costa Sur generation plant.

We are not clear on the exact cause at this time.

Luma teams are responding and working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Given the size and scope of the blackout, power restoration could extend into tomorrow (Thursday)," the statement read.

They try to restore power in several areas of Puerto Rico

In an update to this release, Luma Energy explains that it has teams deployed throughout the island "for substation restoration."

Specifically, they report that they continue to work to restore service in the southeast of the island (in Yabucoa), at the Palo Seco Plant and in Cambalache.

At the moment they have not reported the number of clients and municipalities that have been affected by this blackout in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, in charge of electricity generation, posted a video on social networks in which a fire was observed at the Costa Sur plant.

“Fault in the output breaker of Unit #5 of Costa Sur at 230kv caused the output of units 5 and 6 of the Central.

The protection system of the electrical system took the rest of the units that were generating out of service, ”reads the writing on Twitter.

The Bureau of the Puerto Rico Fire Department published on its Twitter account that "they extinguished the fire that affected two substations at the Costa Sur plant in Guayanilla."
