Because of their country's role in the war against Ukraine, Belarusian representatives were not welcome at a commemoration of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Minsk has now reacted.

The foreign ministry of the authoritarian republic summoned the German ambassador because of the invitation of official Belarusian representatives to a commemoration ceremony in the former Nazi concentration camp in Buchenwald.

The authority in Minsk announced that Manfred Huterer was handed a protest note on Monday.

"The disregard for the victims of the Belarusian people in the years of the Second World War is unacceptable," it said.

In the former concentration camp near Weimar, the 77th anniversary of the liberation was commemorated on Sunday.

Official representatives from Russia and Belarus were not wanted because of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which is partly being waged from Belarusian soil.

However, representatives of the Belarusian opposition and the human rights organization »Memorial«, which is banned in Russia, did take part.

Buchenwald survivor Boris Romanchenko was killed in a Russian bomb attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in March.
