(CNN) ––
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced on Monday new regulations on firearms in the country.
The measures aim to curb the use of homemade weapons, also called "ghost weapons".
Regulation of so-called "ghost guns" -- unregulated devices made from untraceable kits -- will address a critical gap in the government's ability to track them, by requiring pre-purchase background checks and identification numbers. series on some of the components.
Although ghost weapons make up a relatively small portion of weapons recovered by law enforcement, they have been seen more frequently in recent years.
Biden also named Steve Dettelbach, a former Ohio federal prosecutor, on Monday as his candidate to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Biden's previous candidate was forced to withdraw by opposition in the Senate.
The move comes as gun violence rises in the United States and the White House faces increased pressure to take action.
