Yemeni-UN talks on stopping the aggression on Yemen

Yemeni Foreign Minister, Eng. Hisham Sharaf, discussed today with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, the latest developments on the Yemeni arena, including those related to the armistice and efforts to stop the aggression against Yemen.

During the meeting, Sharaf called on the international community to understand the grievances of the Yemeni people and their steadfastness in the face of aggression and the comprehensive siege, noting that the leadership in Sanaa has repeatedly stressed that its hand is still extended towards a just and honorable peace for the Yemeni people.

Sharaf pointed out that the seriousness of demonstrating peace intentions by the other party must be translated into practical and tangible steps felt by the Yemeni people who are suffering from the worst humanitarian disaster as a result of the aggression, most notably not obstructing the entry of ships of oil derivatives and domestic gas to the port of Hodeidah and reopening Sanaa airport. The Yemeni foreign minister explained that the implementation of these humanitarian steps represents a positive message to the Yemeni people that there are realistic measures adopted by the United Nations and taken by the other side to confirm its orientation towards peace and to prepare the atmosphere for reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement.

Sharaf also called for the other side to abide by the provisions of the temporary armistice that entered into force under the auspices of the United Nations, and to stress the need to stop violations.

For his part, Grundberg explained that there is an opportunity to consolidate the temporary truce and turn it into a comprehensive cease-fire, leading to a peaceful political settlement, stressing that the Yemeni people deserve all support after the suffering they experienced.

On the second of this month, the United Nations announced a humanitarian truce for a period of two months in Yemen, according to which military operations would stop, with the opening of Sana’a International Airport for a number of flights, and the opening of the port of Hodeidah in front of oil derivatives ships.
