Police release suspect's characteristics and track an Arizona U-Haul vehicle. He assures that he is not a terrorist despite using smoke bombs in the attack.

New York police are searching for the suspect in a Tuesday morning shooting at a Brooklyn subway station that left 16 people injured, five of them in critical condition.

It is about a black man, 5'5'' tall and 170 pounds, who was wearing a gray sweater, green vest and a gas mask to protect himself from the smoke of a bomb that he himself activated before shooting at random to the occupants of his subway car and the Sunset Park station.

The man activated a smoke bomb when he was on board a train on the N line and began shooting at the car and the platform.

Police sources quoted by the NBC News station in New York indicated that he only stopped because his gun jammed.

The investigators believe that he believes that the attacker acted alone and that it is not an act of terrorism, although the police commissioner, Keechant Sewell, indicated that she does not rule out any hypothesis.

Police are searching for a U-Haul moving van with Arizona license plate AL31408 that may be linked to the suspect, whose identity is unknown.

The failure of the surveillance camera system at that station has made it difficult to track the man, according to the city's mayor, Eric Adams.

"This individual is still on the loose, he is dangerous," New York Governor Kathy Hochul told a news conference.

Witnesses described the scene as a "horror movie".

Kenneth Foote-Smith, who was on the attacked train, said people tried to escape when the smoke bomb went off but the door connecting the carriages was stuck.

"We couldn't see the faces of the people in the car," he explained to Foote-Smith on NBC New York.

As soon as the train stopped at the station they tried to transfer to another one in front, but visibility was limited due to smoke

, as indicated.
