The Ukrainian ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Kornichuk, today (Tuesday) sent an appeal to the Prime Minister's Office, stating that his country sees the planned celebrations this year in Israel on May 9, to mark Victory Day over the Nazis, as a problematic date.

This is what Israel Today has learned.

Israel marks by law the day of victory on May 9.

This date was set at the time by Stalin and is still accepted today in some former Soviet Union countries, including Ukraine.

On the other hand, in the West, May 8 is the day of the liberation.

The ambassador confirmed these things in a conversation with "Israel Today."

He said in a conversation with senior members of the Bennett bureau that: "For Ukraine, marking the liberation on the date set by the Russians would be a provocative step. I emphasize that I do not interfere in internal Israeli affairs and the legal situation is clear to me. "In light of what is happening, we also turn to the veterans and tell them that for us the date is problematic and we want to mark the victory on May 8, as is customary in the West."

According to the ambassador, a decision has not yet been made in the Bennett bureau and the matter has been investigated.

It should be noted that according to the language of the law, the date of the festivities can be changed only if it falls on a Saturday or a holiday.

A move for another reason, and certainly in response to a Ukrainian appeal, is likely to affect Israeli-Russian ties.

The Prime Minister's Office responded: "The Prime Minister's Office has received a request on the matter from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel.

The ambassador was directed to continue the dialogue with the Minister of Construction and Housing, Zeev Elkin, since the minister had previously dealt with legislation that stipulates the day of victory over the Nazis, as well as deepening relations between the two countries. "
