After the attack in the New York subway with at least 23 injuries, the suspected perpetrator who was arrested remains in custody for the time being.

Judge Roanne Mann said at a first brief hearing at a Brooklyn borough court on Thursday that there will be no possibility of release on bail, at least for the time being.

The 62-year-old man was accompanied by a defense attorney and responded briefly to formal questions from the judge.

The defense attorney asked that her client receive a psychiatric evaluation and medication for leg cramps in prison.

The man, who was arrested in Manhattan on Wednesday, is to be charged with a "terrorist or other violent attack" on public transport.

If convicted, he faces a life sentence.

The suspect, who was born in New York and last gave places of residence in Philadelphia and Wisconsin, is accused of opening fire on a subway train in the Brooklyn borough on Tuesday.

At least 23 people were injured in the incident, ten of them from gunfire.

The exact background to the motive was initially unclear.

According to eyewitnesses, he stopped firing when his gun jammed before dodging in the ensuing stampede.

Investigators later found, among other things, a semi-automatic pistol in the subway, as well as three additional magazines with ammunition, an ax, fireworks and a petroleum-like liquid.

This points to further plans that the man has probably canceled.
