Verkhovna Rada allows the recruitment of foreigners into the army and intelligence

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided today to suspend the work of the parliamentary bloc of the Opposition Platform for Life, the largest opposition party in the country.

The deputy of the "European Solidarity Party" Alexei Goncharenko described the opposition party and supportive of normalization of relations with Russia as representing a "fifth column".

On March 20, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine suspended the activities of a number of political parties in the country, claiming that they had relations with Russia.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections, the opposition Platform party won 44 seats out of the 450 seats in the Rada, making it the second largest force in Parliament after the ruling Servant of the People Party.

The suspension of the party bloc's work comes two days after the Ukrainian authorities announced the arrest of opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk, who headed the party's political council from November 2018 until early March.

In addition, Goncharenko announced the adoption of a new decree paving the way for the employment of foreign citizens in the Ukrainian intelligence services and armed forces.

The deputy stated that the decision allows foreign citizens to work in the intelligence as well as serve in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces for a period of three to five years.

Ukraine had previously announced that foreign mercenaries would be allowed to come to Ukraine to fight against Russian forces.
