Airline CEOs call for end to mask mandate 0:58
(CNN) --
A federal judge in Florida on Monday struck down the Biden administration's mask mandate on airplanes and other public transportation.
US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle said the mandate was illegal because it exceeded the statutory authority of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and because its application violated administrative law.
It's unclear when or how quickly the ruling will be implemented at airports and train stations, or whether the Justice Department will attempt to block or appeal the ruling.
The CDC extended the mask mandate on public transportation just the week before, intending it to last through May 3.
The requirement to wear masks on public transport applied to planes, trains and other means of transport and had been in place since the early stages of the pandemic in 2020.
