- This uprising is linked to a form of misunderstanding of the Maidan revolution which scared away President Yanukovych, described as pro-Russian.
Even if this term is difficult to use as it covers different realities.
Some Ukrainian media have presented this revolution as bringing nationalists to power, which may have been exploited by pro-Russian separatists.
Then, what added fuel to the fire was the adoption of a law on the use of languages at the regional level, which was experienced as a restriction of the Russian language.
This law was never enacted, but its passage reinforced nationalist perceptions in the Russian media.
