If you want to learn something about the history of Gröbenzell, you can't get past him: Rudolf Ulrich.

Since the founding of the historic association "Die Gröben- keeper" he has been its chairman.

Gröbenzell – Now he has resigned from office.

He looks back on the past few years with pride – and has one wish.

The memorial project is not yet over for Rudolf Ulrich.

It commemorates the victims of the world wars.

The curator of history, together with the other guardians of Gröben, worked to ensure that the memorial found a new home in the center of Rathausstraße after the town hall had been demolished and a new location sought.

The municipal council had actually designated the cemetery for this purpose.

In the end, the Groeben Keepers prevailed.

Memorial should be corrected

But something still rankles Ulrich: "I would like the information missing on the memorial to be corrected."

Maybe that still works.

After all, the club has a significant influence in the place.

This is not least thanks to its long-time chairman Ulrich.

Volunteering has always been important to him.

He was born on April 25, 1941 in Trostberg in Chiemgau.

In nearby Traunstein he was involved in the Catholic youth and the Red Cross.

Ulrich graduated from high school, trained as a government inspector candidate at the district office in Traunstein and worked in the Interior Ministry and the Bavarian State Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs.

In 1977, the now 80-year-old moved to Gröbenzell with his wife and newborn son for work-related reasons.

From 1997 he worked there in the town hall, until his retirement in 2006 he was active as an executive officer.

It was also the year 1997 when the association “Die Gröben- keeper” was launched.

17 Gröbenzellers had joined forces for this.

There were Albert Donhauser, Brigitte Böttger, Horst Hell, Hans Geigenfeind, Anton Kammerl, Ludwig Klauser (father of the CSU municipal council of the same name) - and Ulrich.

He took over as chairman.

After 25 years he has now given it up.

The historian Sven Deppisch was chosen as his successor.

The beginnings in the police building

The history of Gröbenzell was very important to the 17 founding members, ten of whom are still active today.

Ten years earlier, Horst Hell, who has since died, had built up a "local history collection" of documents, household goods, tools and inventory from demolished houses in the basement of the former police building.

Ulrich was also active here at the time: he made sure that volunteers looked after the collection and opened it regularly.

In addition, there were Gröbenzellers, who had successfully campaigned in citizens' initiatives for the preservation of the former station economy and the old school.

However, the former station inn, the witch, has now been demolished.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)

The fact that the old school did not meet the same fate was a stroke of luck for the Groben Keepers.

Because the basement of the former police building became too small at some point.

In 2000 the collection moved to the top floor of the old school.

This is how the local history and peat museum came about.

Everything matched the goals of the association: to awaken interest in local history issues and to preserve the historical, artistic, cultural and architectural heritage.

Under chairman Ulrich, the Gröbenkeepers have been very busy over the past 25 years, unfortunately with a compulsory Corona break.

As a rule, however, the association regularly invites people to events and publishes a newsletter (Ulrich's favorite child) once or twice a year, which not only contains internal association news, but also repeatedly deals with Gröbenzell's past.

The museum, which is supported by the municipality and run by Gröben guardians on a voluntary basis, not only offers a permanent exhibition, but also a special exhibition twice a year on average.

From the bank to books

Ulrich proudly looks back on the events organized by the Gröben guardians: the celebration of "100 years of the railway station" in 1998, the celebration of the double anniversary of 75 years of the Catholic Church of St. Johann Baptist and the Old School in 2000 and the construction of a memorial to the past Gröben- keeper house on Olchinger Strasse.

Ulrich was also happy about the construction of a bank on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the so-called Russenbrücke in 2017. The name is misleading because the bridge was actually built by French prisoners of war.

And last but not least, there are various books that were published by the Groeben Keepers;

"450 Years of Gröbenzell" by Johann Böhmer as well as writings and books by Kurt Lehnstaedt, which deal primarily with the years 1933 to 1945 and together with Barbara Buck-Estner with Gröbenzell's path to an independent community.
