Amnesty International France called on Emmanuel Macron to repatriate the 200 French children detained in Syria and to make the protection of human rights "
a priority
" of his second term, in a press release published Sunday evening immediately after his re-election.

We ask that the 200 French children detained in Syria, in defiance of all the rules of law, can be repatriated without delay, which is what more and more European states are moving towards
," writes the NGO.
So far, Paris has maintained a case-by-case return policy for these children - 35, mostly orphans, have been repatriated so far - and considers that adults should be tried on the spot.
The return of these French people who had joined the Islamic State organization is a sensitive subject in a country marked by the jihadist attacks perpetrated on its soil since 2015.

Break with ambiguous legislation

While the collection of evidence of potential international crimes is underway in Ukraine and several European states have recently been able to try Syrian war criminals in the name of universal jurisdiction, the law in France still includes locks very strongly restricting the possibilities of prosecution by its courts
", deplores the NGO.

to break with ambiguous legislation and make the necessary adaptations to give ourselves all the legal means to try in France the alleged perpetrators of international crimes
", insists the NGO.
France must also "
stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, countries involved in a coalition suspected of war crimes in Yemen
", writes Amnesty International, calling on France to establish "
real parliamentary control
" over its arms sales.
