New York-Sana

Iran has condemned the politicization of the chemical weapons file in Syria by some member states of the Organization of Chemical Weapons, noting the Syrian state's implementation of its commitments and constructive efforts in this file.

In her speech today during the UN Security Council meeting on Syria, Zahra Ershadi, the Iranian ambassador and assistant representative to the United Nations, said that “Syria has made real efforts to implement its commitments and has demonstrated its willingness to cooperate with the technical secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” adding: “However, it is disappointing that Some member states have politicized the chemical weapons file in Syria and prevented the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from confirming Syria’s commitment to its commitments, leading to dialogue and constructive cooperation.”

Irshady reiterated her country's demand for the full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, adding: "We believe that politicizing the implementation of the treaty and exploiting the organization for political motives endanger the credibility of the treaty and the organization."

Irshaidi stressed that any investigation into the use of chemical weapons must be impartial, professional, credible and concrete in order to establish the facts.

Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, stressed during a UN Security Council session on Syria that the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention represents an opportunity to renew the call to remove the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from politicization, preserve the technical nature of its work, and address the wrong practices of its various teams.
