The Spanish authorities announced that 13 migrants were rescued in the Atlantic Ocean off the Canary Islands today, while 20 others are still missing.

Reuters quoted the Spanish Coast Guard as saying: "A rescue plane spotted a boat floating in the sea. Immediately, a helicopter, a rescue boat and two ships headed to a distance of 100 km south of the Spanish Canary Islands, where 13 migrants were rescued, two of them in serious condition," noting that the survivors reported the loss of twenty others. They were with them on the boat.

The Canary Islands have been an active destination for migrants trying to reach Europe in recent years, with monitoring groups reporting that around 4,400 people went missing at sea last year while trying to reach Spain.
