43 prisoners were killed during a riot that broke out inside the Bellavista prison in Santo Domingo de los Colorados, central Ecuador.
AFP quoted Ecuadorean Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo as saying today: "Confrontations between two drug smuggling gangs under the control of the Mexican cartels erupted today inside the Bellavista prison, about 80 kilometers from the capital Quito, killing 43 prisoners and forty others trying to escape, but the police stopped them."
He added that immediately the so-called security protocols were launched to contain the riot inside the prison and ambulances transported the wounded to the hospital. It happened early last month in a prison in the south of the country, where 20 prisoners were killed and the bodies were mutilated.
