The Brazilian authorities announced today that the death toll from the torrential rains that fell on Recife, the capital of the northeastern state of Pernambuco, has reached at least 44 dead and 56 missing, while the search for survivors continues.
"We have counted 44 dead, 56 missing, 25 wounded, 3,957 displaced and 533 displaced, and heavy rains are expected in the coming days, which requires maintaining self-protection measures," Regional Development Minister Daniel Ferreira told AFP.
And a civil defense statement confirmed yesterday that since last Wednesday, 34 deaths have been recorded in the state and more than 1,300 people have been displaced or displaced due to the rains.
Since last Tuesday, the storm has caused landslides on hillsides, rivers overflowing and large torrents of mud that washed away everything in its path, while footage released by local authorities today showed rescuers and volunteers removing rubble in the Jardim Monteverde region, located on the border between Recife and the municipality of Jaboatao dos Guararapes.
