US Vice President Kamala Harris has called for a ban on assault weapons, in the wake of recent massacres in the United States.
And the BBC quoted Harris as saying that "the time has come to say 'stop' to gun violence," noting the need for everyone to agree on one position to end the phenomenon of armed violence that pervades the country.
Harris added that "the solution is clear and includes things such as background checks of those who buy weapons and bans on these offensive weapons, which are designed for the specific purpose of killing a lot of people quickly," stressing that "there is no place for an offensive weapon in a civil society, it is a weapon of war."
Harris considered that "attempts to conduct public scrutiny of people buying weapons and ban assault weapons have met with many obstacles," indicating that this issue is divisive in the United States.
Democrats support stricter laws, while Republicans prefer to leave things as they are under the pretext of individual rights and the implementation of the constitution.
Data issued by the Archives of Armed Violence in the United States revealed that firearm homicides in American society had risen to unprecedented levels, as Americans ended the year 2021 with 693 mass shootings, while the previous year witnessed 611 incidents and 2019 witnessed (417 incidents).
