The Cool Art Palmyra project won the Special Excellence Award during the ICCROM Sharjah Award Ceremony for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region 2020-2022, which was held today in the Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
The Cool Art Palmyra project, an integrated project in the Temple of Baal Shamin in Palmyra, won the Special Excellence Award, along with three other projects, the Hisham Palace project in Jericho, the Qarara village project in Gaza, and the digital documentation project for historical documents in Jerusalem.
The grand prize for the third cycle was won by the project to protect Beirut's cultural heritage from Lebanon and the project to rehabilitate the houses and buildings surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem from Palestine.
The honoring also included the two projects that won the last cycle of the ICCROM Sharjah Award, which was held two years ago, namely, the project to rehabilitate the Al-Saqatiyah market in Aleppo. Grand Prize Winner in the Collectibles and Collections Category within Cultural Institutions.
On the sidelines of participating in the award ceremony, the Syrian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Ghassan Abbas, met with Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and sponsor of the ceremony, and UAE Minister of Culture Noura Al Kaabi, in addition to a number of representatives of heritage and culture bodies, international organizations and international experts in this regard. The field where the importance of supporting the Syrian heritage, which is a treasure for humanity, was emphasized.
