Oil, gas: Europeans covet the African El Dorado

DECRYPTION - EU member states are looking for alternative hydrocarbon suppliers to Russia. Africa is full of promise, and of difficulty.


On May 22, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz began his first tour of Africa with a stopover in Senegal.

Objective: to obtain an agreement on the supply of gas for his country, which is particularly dependent on Moscow.

At the same time, Berlin is discussing with Qatar, champion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and with Canada.

In April, Mario Draghi, prime minister of an Italy that buys 40% of its gas from Russia, planned to criss-cross Africa just after announcing an agreement with Algeria.

Algiers should become Rome's main gas supplier next year.

Prevented from traveling because of the Covid, "Super Mario" sent two ministers to Angola and the Republic of Congo.
