Two Senegalese opposition coalitions, which have joined forces for the legislative elections scheduled for July, said on Friday June 3 their desire to "

" on President Macky Sall and prevent him from running for a third term.

The Wallu Senegal coalition (Save Senegal in the Ouolof language) led by ex-president Abdoulaye Wade concluded an alliance several weeks ago with Yewwi Askan Wi (“

Free the people

”), led by Ousmane Sonko.

The coalition least well placed in one department undertakes to support the other.

It is a question of "

building a tactical electoral alliance in order to obtain a parliamentary majority in the legislative elections of July 31, which imposes on Macky Sall a governmental cohabitation

", said Friday to the press Mamadou Lamine Diallo, an official of "

Wallu Senegal

”, in the presence of Ousmane Sonko.

A “risky outlook”

The president restored the post of prime minister in December 2021. But he has still not appointed a head of government.

Mr. Sall indicated in a recent interview with the magazine Jeune Afrique that he would choose him after the legislative elections within the formation which will have won them.

The president, elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2019, also said that after these elections he would lift the vagueness on whether or not he would apply for a third term in 2024. The alliance's objective is also to "

bar the risky prospect of Macky Sall running in the 2024 presidential election to run for an illegitimate and unconstitutional third term

,” said Lamine Diallo.

The elections of July 31, in a round, aim to renew the 150 seats of deputy.

The current Assembly is largely dominated by the presidential coalition.

The legislative elections in July are organized after the local elections in March, won by the opposition in several large cities such as Dakar, Ziguinchor (South) and Thiès (West).

Abdoulaye Wade, 96, led Senegal from 2000 to 2012.
