Former US President Donald Trump has made it clear that he is seeking protection from his closest allies around the upcoming public hearings of the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, and some names prominent in Congress and the Republican Party will answer the call.

Trump's team has told some of his most loyal acolytes on Capitol Hill that the former president wants the people to vigorously defend him and push back the select committee while public hearings unfold, according to Republican sources familiar with the request.

Commission members have advanced that the hearings could focus on Trump's direct role in undermining the election results.

The commission has worked on the thesis that Trump's obsession with losing the election and his spread of false claims about the results is what laid the groundwork for the violent and deadly riots on Capitol Hill.

Trump's insistence that his allies defend his honor has galvanized Republicans inside and outside of Congress, with a wide range of plans to protect him.

This despite a belief by some Republicans that they should deflect attention from Jan. 6 and instead continue to beat the drum of current economic and cultural issues that have resonated with voters.

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans on the Jan. 6 commission, said she is confident the panel's new evidence will draw viewers' attention during upcoming hearings, adding that former President Donald Trump's threat to democracy continues.

In a prerecorded interview that aired Sunday morning on CBS, Cheney called Trump's rhetoric "more extreme language, frankly, than the language that prompted the attack."

“We are not in a situation where former President Trump has expressed any sense of remorse for what happened.

We are, in fact, in a situation where he continues to use language that is even more extreme, frankly, than the language that prompted the attack,” he stated.

“So, people need to pay attention.

People need to look and understand how easily our democratic system can fall apart if we don't defend it,” he added.

Cheney also said he believes the Jan. 6 attack was a conspiracy, noting, "It's extremely broad, it's very well organized, it's really chilling."

Cheney indicated that specifically what worries her is "how extensive this multi-pronged effort was."

“Fortunately we are not in a time of civil war, but we are certainly in a time of trial.

We are absolutely at a point where we have to make a decision about whether we are going to put our love for this country above partisanship.

And for me, there's just no gray area in that question,” he said.
