It is well known, unity is strength.

No wonder, then, that the Nupes succeeded in qualifying a good number of its candidates for the second round of the legislative elections.

The union of the main left-wing parties, united behind the figure of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, obtained 25.2% of the votes in the first round of the legislative elections according to estimates by Ipsos Sopra Steria, which should enable it to win between 150 and 190 seats in the National Assembly.

In terms of votes at the national level, Nupes and the presidential majority are neck and neck.

Together!, the party of President Emmanuel Macron would obtain 25.2% of the votes in the first round, with a projection of 255 to 295 seats in the National Assembly at the end of the second round.

Much calmer than usual, Jean-Luc Mélenchon said “all the emotion” which is his this Sunday evening “in view of the result as it is announced”.

“At the end of this first round, the New Popular Union comes out on top, it will be present in more than 500 constituencies in the second round,” congratulated the leader of the Insoumis.

Faced with a "beaten and defeated" presidential party, he called on the voters, "for our personal lives and the destiny of the common part", "to surge next Sunday to reject the disastrous projects of the majority of Mr. Macron.

La Nupes in Matignon, a possibility?

As it stands, Jean-Luc Mélenchon's bet to win the legislative elections to be appointed Prime Minister is in the dark.

It is however a refrain that he started very early, after his defeat in the first round of the presidential election – where he still collected 21.9% of the votes.

Wanting to make the legislative elections the “third round”, the Rebellious candidate had succeeded in rallying the troops on the left, for lack of having been able to reduce the number of candidates in the race for the supreme office.

After days of discussions, negotiations on the number of seats and the distribution of constituencies, La France insoumise first reached an agreement with Generations, then with the Greens, the Communist Party and finally the PS.

Thus was born the Nupes, New Popular Ecological and Social Union.

In detail, the agreement provided for LFI to present 360 candidates, the Greens a hundred, the Socialists 70, the PC 50.

Mélenchon not a candidate, but strong support

If Jean-Luc Mélenchon chose not to run and to leave the constituency where he had been a deputy since 2017 (the 4th of Bouches-du-Rhône) to his former campaign manager, Manuel Bompard, other figures from La France rebellious have embarked on the race, including the outgoing Clémentine Autain, François Ruffin, Alexis Corbière or even Adrien Quatennens.

Yannick Jadot, the EELV candidate - already a MEP - did not present himself, but he nevertheless supported Nupes during several trips.

On the side of the PS, the First Secretary Olivier Faure threw himself into the race in the 11th district of Seine-et-Marne, where he was already elected.

The communist Fabien Roussel, he was aiming for a second term in the 20th district of the North.
