The French fire brigade announced control of a huge fire that ravaged 650 hectares in southern France and forced a number of residents to evacuate their homes.

The fire brigade had deployed in the Gare region in southern France 950 firefighters, supported by firefighting planes, to control the fire.

AFP quoted a spokesman for the agency, Colonel Eric Agrinier, as saying yesterday that the danger phase has ended and at the present time the fire has been contained, which means that we do not believe that it is still possible to expand.

About 520 firefighters are still deployed in the area, 90 kilometers north of Montpellier and the Mediterranean coast, according to the spokesman.

He said that the units will continue to contain and monitor the fire to avoid the risk of its exacerbation, with the temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and the possibility of winds and low humidity.

The fire, which emergency response teams described as "huge", started near the village of Bordzak and forced residents of nearby Besaj and other villages to evacuate their homes last Thursday night.

The local official's office had announced that about 100 people had been transferred to guest houses and restaurants in the area.

Last month, an artillery fire broke out during military exercises in a shooting range near the coastal city of Marseille, covering about 600 hectares.
