Bremen celebrated: For the year 2021, the city-state was considered the “vaccination master” in Germany and had the best vaccination rate.

That now turns out to be wrong.

Why?

Bremen – Werder Bremen missed it.

And Bremen as a state now too.

Well, the green-whites were promoted to the Bundesliga after finishing second in the second Bundesliga last season – but in the end it wasn’t the place in the sun that got Werder.

Bremen had already occupied this first place.

When asked who had the best vaccination rate in Germany, Bremen came first.

In 2021, the Hanseatic city had vaccinated the most people against the corona virus.

But as won as it is gone: When it comes to vaccination against the corona virus, where Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach is now calling for the second booster vaccination for everyone, who is getting a lot of headwind from Stiko boss Thomas Mertens, but is approved in Lower Saxony, Bremen is not at the top after all the syringe.

Vaccination rate: Bremen is no longer top in the new evaluation - Lower Saxony is improving

As can be seen from a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which was picked up by

Der Spiegel

, the vaccination rates in the federal states sometimes differ significantly from the previously known values – precisely when the place of residence of the vaccinated person is used instead of the place of vaccination becomes.

In addition to city states such as Bremen or Hamburg, the surrounding federal states are particularly affected.

As can be seen from the data from the RKI, the vaccination rate in Bremen – the proportion of those who have been vaccinated at least once – was 88.3 percent as of December 31, 2021 according to the previous calculation

According to the new calculation, Bremen only has 77.4 percent.

Lower Saxony, on the other hand, improved from 77.2 to 79.4 percent.

The difference is explained by the fact that in the city-states many people who lived elsewhere were vaccinated.

According to the RKI report, this applied to 17 percent of vaccinations in Bremen and 13 percent in Hamburg.

The different methods of recording also have an impact on the ranking of the federal states in terms of vaccination progress.

Bremen is therefore not the nationwide leader, but was only seventh based on the new data at the turn of the year.

Schleswig-Holstein was the leader, followed by Lower Saxony.

Bremen loses top place in the vaccination rate - that's why there is new data

The new vaccination quotas are based on a changed database: Previously, information from the reporting portal of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) was used for recording.

The new values, in turn, were determined using billing data from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV).

These also contain the place of residence and postal code of the vaccinated person, but are only available after a delay of several months.

A spokesman for Bremen’s Health Minister Claudia Bernhard (Die Linke) told

Der Spiegel

: “It was clear to us from the start that we would also vaccinate people from the Lower Saxony area in Bremen.” What the data also shows for the corona vaccinations in Bremen : Bremen has very good vaccination numbers in the older age groups, but the vaccination rate is too low for under 18-year-olds.

"Here we have the clear will to expand the vaccination offers again after the summer holidays," said the spokesman for the Bremen Ministry of Health.
