The DSE Diploma of Secondary Education Examination results are released this Wednesday (20th). Lau Chak-sing, who will succeed Leung Cheuk-wai as the temporary dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong in August, believes that allowing overseas doctors to practice in Hong Kong will affect the attractiveness of local medical schools, and the number of secondary school graduates The decline does have an impact on the number of enrollees.

However, he stressed that Leung Cheuk-wai's admission arrangement will continue to be followed, and at least 75% of the places will be open for admission to DSE candidates through JUPAS University Joint Admissions.

Liu Zexing has a number of public positions. In addition to being the convener of the new crown vaccine expert committee, he was also invited by the new government to join the six members of the anti-epidemic expert advisory group.

Liu Zexing has many public positions: if you can do it, you must do it

Liu Zexing has many and important public positions. In his recent interview, he admitted that "the pressure is really great", but he emphasized that his main job is a medical school, which is the focus.

However, he also pointed out that, as the graduates said, every doctor wants to help Hong Kong, "I will do whatever I can, and those outside the medical school will try to do the best they can."

The first "Enrichment Year" medical students graduated this year. Liu believes that the new curriculum system is a success. After taking over as the dean, he will continue to improve the curriculum and facilities to attract more students to enroll in medicine, including increasing clinical learning experience and using technology to simulate on-site treatment. , such as the use of ultrasound to check the heart and lung function of patients, etc.

But he also emphasized that the above work has been in progress, "It doesn't matter if I take office first, I will do it all the way, how can we make it easier for my classmates to read happily?"

Allowing overseas doctors to practice in Hong Kong and reducing the number of students will affect admissions

However, the Legislative Council passed the "Medical Registration (Amendment) Ordinance 2021" last year, allowing overseas doctors to practice in Hong Kong. At present, 52 graduate doctors from 52 institutions have been recognized, and the number will be expanded to 100 in the future. Therefore, medical students from the University of Hong Kong are no longer the only candidates. choose.

Liu said frankly that he "believes that there will be an impact" on admissions, and believes that medical schools in other places will attract candidates to enroll.

In addition, as the number of students declines year by year, Liu is also worried that the number of students will be affected. He pointed out that in 2012, there were more than 70,000 applicants for JUPAS, but this year it has dropped to about 43,000.

He believes that the impact lies in the scores, but he also emphasized that the candidates who have been interviewed earlier will be selected after the results are released next week.

"With less than 20,000 JUPAS students choosing so many courses, it must have an impact."

This year, the number of students enrolled in the medical department of the University of Hong Kong will remain at 900

But actual data doesn't seem to show an impact.

Liu revealed that in previous years, there were about 800 to 900 students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, and this year's number has not changed.

He also emphasized that in order to ensure social mobility, Dean Leung Cheuk-wai's arrangement will continue to open at least 75% of the places to be admitted to DSE candidates through JUPAS. If the 295 places this year are calculated, that is about 220.

However, he also said that students' intention to choose subjects will also affect the proportion of students admitted. Therefore, whether the admission through JUPAS can meet the standard depends on the relevant projects.
