Opinion | Leaving the police: The crisis is ideological Israel today

Judges of the courts ridicule the police in the eyes of the criminals who come out of the walls of the holding cell without deterrent punishment, and worse - without punishment at all

In recent weeks, we have seen extensive headlines about the fact that the Israel Police is in the midst of an intensifying wave of police retirements.

Most of the retirees are young people who initially knew what profession they were coming from and what the wage conditions were.

Therefore, and without diminishing the importance of the employment conditions of the police and their abrasive and life-threatening missions, this has the effect of reducing and distorting the main cause of the deep crisis in which the police find themselves.

On a narrow view, one tends to point to the root of the problems under the "magnifying glass" of "worth me or not worth me".

But this look misses the motivation that leads young people to choose a particular life path.

Without being drawn into over-innocence, it is known that there is a growing erosion when it comes to choosing a life of devotion to sublime ideas, and it is becoming the domain of small communities in the population.

But still, there is a growing need for action that will give our lives value and meaning.

The doing that a person decides to take constitutes the space of his belonging and identification;

It reflects the scale of values and aspirations.

The Israel Police is a common social force that stands as a wall in the form of resilience and the protection of society as a whole.

As part of this, the employee has the ability to directly influence the existence and the most basic need for "personal security" for each and every one.

On the face of it, where can there be a greater sense of meaning than there is in the police?

Here the depth of the crisis is revealed: motivated young people who join the police meet a body that has lost confidence in itself, its ability to influence and the public backing it receives.

The root is in the way in which the leaders in Israel have weakened the authority and ability to influence the police in the face of the challenges, which have become an existential danger to the security of the state.

Among other things, no minimum laws have been enacted that back up the police effort, and court judges ridicule the police in the eyes of the criminals who come out of the walls of the holding cell without deterrent punishment, and worse - without punishment at all.

If an ordinary citizen can not sleep peacefully in the face of the current situation, all the more so the policemen, who look first at the system and see the development of the culture of inclusion, weakening and systemic castration, while the public loses faith in it.

In light of the serious security risk facing us, the Israeli government is required to mobilize all the efforts, which in the past focused on strengthening the IDF and other state bodies, to strengthen internal security services.

Among other things, the possibility must be examined that tracks such as the Nahal, a dedicated officer and Knesset preparatory schools, which have established joint projects with the Golani and Givati divisions, will now direct their efforts to recruit quality personnel to the police and the Border Police.

The state must prioritize internal security servants in every construction project, or any other reward, until governance is re-established and we see a revolution in the personal security index of Israeli citizens.

A right spirit will carry with it the spirit of personal dedication, and no less - the spirit of backing and national support.

In doing so, they deprived the police of their self-destiny and reduced their ambitions.

Were we wrong?
