The State Corporation for Atomic Energy (Rosatom) has begun construction work on a nuclear power plant in the city of Al-Daba, 300 km northwest of Cairo, in what appears to be the largest collaboration between the two countries in decades, and a deal valued at approximately 25 billion euros.

Work began last night (Wednesday) on a project intended to benefit electricity production, that is, a civil nuclear program that will include four reactors, which will provide 1,600 watts each.

In doing so, the country of the Nile will become the first country in the region to have a third generation nuclear reactor.

The discussions began already in 2017 between the presidents of the two countries, al-Sisi and Putin.

This coming Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Egypt in order to participate in the Arab League conference that will be held in Cairo.

The Egyptian Minister of Energy, Mohamed Shaker, and the CEO of the Rosatom Corporation, Alex Lichtchev, yesterday gave the signal to begin work on laying the first concrete slab at the nuclear power plant. The Egyptian authorities issued the licenses for the construction of the first unit at the end of June.

"This is a historic event in Egypt. The political leadership achieved the fruits of the Egyptian-Russian cooperation, and contributed to overcoming the various challenges the project faced - especially the corona epidemic," said Shaker.
