When the Loth Hof store opened, there were bets in the village that it would not last long.

The store is now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Münsing

– The wood for the house was felled in the correct phase of the moon.

The architecture by Thomas Strauch-Stoll and Dorothea Becker is reminiscent of a rural town.

The trained carpenter Christian Kohn did the interior design himself. Together with his wife Bettina, he leased the Loth Hof shop on Münsinger Biberweg in 1997.

The building with an apartment on the upper floor, which has been praised in many architecture publications, belongs to the Mair family, farm name Loth.

She had it built to sell her own agricultural products according to Demeter guidelines.

But the bright, modern and clearly arranged shop was soon to be more than just a farm shop.

Other ecological foods from the region, fish from Lake Starnberg, game meat from local hunters and delicatessen were gradually added to the range.

Organic was still frowned upon back then

“Organic was still frowned upon back then.

It was associated with shriveled apples and saleswomen in sweaters they had knit themselves,” Christian Kohn remembers.

There were bets in the village that the Loth Hof store would not last longer than a year.

This year it is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is thriving.

BSE, dioxin in eggs and other food scandals brought the owners more and more loyal customers.

Most recently, they benefited from the pandemic.

During the lockdown, they also delivered their goods within a 15-kilometer radius with their hybrid company car and offered a pick-up service.

Enjoyment market this Saturday

The Loth Hof shop is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Saturday, July 23, with a gourmet market in and around the shop.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., long-standing producers and suppliers present their products and invite you to tastings.

There is wine and prosecco, gin, vermouth and tonic, Parmesan from the whole loaf, ice cream, chocolates, cakes, freshly prepared crepes, coffee specialties, grilled wild sausage, fresh farmer's bread, olive oils, activated nuts and hand-made ceramics from Crete and probiotics Cleaning supplies.

At the moment, according to Christian Kohn, some people are saving because of the high inflation and the uncertain situation.

So far, the Loth Hof store has not had to increase its prices as much as other grocery stores.

Because of the regional suppliers, the transport costs were kept within limits.

Anyone who chooses seasonal fruit and vegetables, some of which come from a wholesaler near Fürstenfeldbruck, some of which comes from nearby nurseries such as Weidenkam, Hofgut Letten or the organic nursery Biberkor, is also easy on the wallet, says the 68-year-old.

Of course, quality still has its price.

Unique selling point: The cheese counter

A unique selling point of the Loth Hof store is the cheese counter, where the loaves are not wrapped in foil, but can "breathe" and ripen in a steam system.

This saves tons of plastic waste and you can taste it.

Overall, packaging waste is largely avoided.

The eggs and the noodles made from them come from around 300 chickens that roam around in a large outdoor enclosure on the meadow next door.

From time to time one strays into the garden in front of the shop, where you can combine shopping with a cozy cup of cappuccino at small tables from Kohn's second mainstay, the "Studio TeamWerk for ecological living".

The beans for the coffee are supplied by the Murnau roastery and the "Röstperle" from Seeshaupt.

The chocolates are made by hand

Other special features of the Münsinger Naturkostladen are the handcrafted Florentines and pralines, the farmhouse bread freshly baked in Degerndorf and the homemade ravioli with changing fillings delivered once a week from Munich.

Wherever possible, the goods come from the immediate vicinity. In the case of the probiotic cleaning agents, the manufacturer even lives directly opposite the shop.

Because customers expect it these days, they will also find bananas, mangoes and avocados that come by ship in the Loth Hof store, as well as international wines.

Gourmet Kohn not only likes to chat with his regular customers about the fine wines he has just discovered.

The radio chef ("Cooking with Kohn" on BR2) is also happy to reveal his favorite recipes.

The multifaceted Münsinger and founder of Local Agenda 21 is also not averse to a good conversation about politics or culture.

Legendary was the "summer house" between 1991 and 2019, a market with delicacies and stylish handicrafts related to business, which attracted up to 1500 visitors a year.

Bettina and Christian Kohn want to say thank you to their customers this year with a somewhat smaller "Genussmarkt".

"These are just incredibly great people," they say about the many people from Münsinger, Starnberger, Ickinger, Wolfratshauser and Munich who have been loyal to them for years.
