The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted the draft resolution entitled (Economic and Social Repercussions of the Israeli Occupation on the Living Conditions of the Palestinian People in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, and the People of the Occupied Syrian Golan) submitted by Pakistan on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

The adoption of the resolution came after a recorded vote was taken and received the support of 43 countries against the objection of the Israeli occupation entity, 3 countries namely the United States, Canada and Liberia, in addition to 4 abstentions, namely the United Kingdom, Ivory Coast, Solomon Islands and Guatemala.

The resolution reaffirms the principle of the permanent sovereignty of the peoples under foreign occupation over their natural resources and expresses its concern in this regard that (Israel) the occupying Power and the Israeli settlers are exploiting, endangering and depleting natural resources in the occupied Syrian Golan and in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem in particular. As a result of settlement activities that are illegal under international law.

 The resolution notes that the Israeli occupation seriously impedes efforts to achieve environmentally sustainable development and create a sound economic environment in the occupied Syrian Golan and the occupied Palestinian territories, and expresses deep concern about the resulting deterioration in economic and living conditions.

The resolution also reaffirms the inalienable right of the people of the occupied Syrian Golan and the Palestinian people to all their natural and economic resources, and demands (Israel) the occupying power not to exploit these resources, endanger them, cause their loss or depletion, and immediately end their exploitation of natural resources.

The permanent delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations made an intervention in which he stressed that (Israel), the occupying power, continues to use policies and practices that are inconsistent with the relevant Security Council resolutions, international humanitarian law and international human rights law, indicating that the occupying authorities sought to increase the number of settlers living In the occupied Syrian Golan, there has been a significant increase by offering them incentives to reside there, including granting them plots of land and providing large financial incentives, which has led to a steady increase in the number of settlers in recent years, expressing the Syrian Arab Republic’s condemnation of these actions, as all the settlements in The occupied Syrian Golan is illegal under international law.

The permanent delegation clarified that the expansion of settlements and Israeli commercial activity have negative effects on the health of the Syrian citizens in that area, on the environment in which they live, and on the agricultural activities they carry out.

The permanent delegation denounced the occupying force’s use of several methods to confiscate lands and natural resources in the occupied Syrian Golan, including expropriation of lands, expropriation of lands near the ceasefire line to plant landmines, confiscation of lands for military purposes, expropriation of lands for building settlements and agricultural and industrial facilities, and fencing areas under the pretext Put it at the disposal of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

The delegation reiterated the necessity of solving the problem from its roots through the immediate implementation of UN resolutions related to ending the Israeli occupation of the occupied Arab lands.
